2 Favorite Folk Singers and 1 Fantastic Venue {Part Two}

This part is for the locals, or for visitors to our nation’s capital…
Do you live in or near Northern Virginia (outside Washington, D.C.)?
If so, you’ve got to check out Wolf Trap. It’s a National Park, amphitheater (two! plus an indoor center) and Performing Arts Foundation, all rolled into one.
Filene Center
The Filene Center, pictured above, puts on shows for grown ups. Mr. Native Texan and I have enjoyed Fiddler on the Roof, Prairie Home Companion and Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers.

We always purchase covered seats, but lawn tickets are also available at a lesser cost. See the entire seating chart here. Two of the three times we visited the Filene Center, there was a bit of rain. We were so glad we’d bought covered seats!
Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods
In addition to the Filene Center, the park boasts a Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods, which is exactly that: a small stage completely surrounded by woods. Attending a concert at the Wolf Trap Theatre-n-the-Woods is just like having a big party out in the forest.
This summer, the boys and I enjoyed seeing two of our very favorite folk singers perform on the stage at Wolf Trap’s Theatre-in-the-Woods. Both concerts were absolutely fantastic.
National Park Service Junior Ranger Programs
One of the really cool things about Wolf Trap is that it’s located inside a National Park.
Aside from the obvious natural beauty of the setting, the NPS offers a variety of educational programs for kids.
After our Liz Mitchell concert–and after enjoying a picnic lunch at one of the many picnic tables located in the park–the boys decided to earn an official Wolf Trap Junior Ranger patch by completing the Junior Ranger Activity Book.
Joined by a few friends, we enjoyed exploring the park and tracking down answers to the questions in the book. Completing seven out of nine activities qualifies each child to earn a free patch or a badge.

As you can see, we are huge fans of Wolf Trap and its many programs. Getting there is a bit of a trek for us, but we consider it well worth the effort. We look forward to enjoying many more wonderful concerts at this excellent venue in the years to come.
