Add the gelatin to COLD ingredients! Room temperature works fine, too. But do not add gelatin to warm or hot ingredients–it will lump up every time.
Actually, I think it might depend on the type of gelatin you use. I use this gelatin from Great Lakes, and the cold method works perfectly!
