Where does a gluten free, real foodie eat on vacation?
Well, if you happen to vacation at Bethany Beach, Delaware every year like my family does, or (nearby Rehoboth, DE or Ocean City, MD) I’ve got a few recommendations.
I also shared my family’s Real Food Meal Plan for Vacation here.
Gluten Free Real Food in (and near) Bethany Beach
My top 3 gluten free, real food spots include:
- fresh cut garden flowers
- and more!
31806 Good Earth Lane

(There is also a second location in Rehoboth Beach, DE.)
We love this place! I usually pack 95% of our food for a week at the beach–it’s cheaper and healthier that way. But if I forget an important specialized ingredient, it’s great to know I can probably find it at Good Earth Market. One year we ran out of our favorite natural sunscreen, and I found it at Good Earth. Whew!
Good Earth stocks a large variety of organic groceries–including dairy and meat–and nontoxic household items. They often have local produce available, along with hand-picked flower bouquets. There’s an adorable farm and garden on the premises, too.
Located inside Good Earth Market
The Birch Tree Cafe is a dedicate gluten-free bakery with all sorts of super yummy GF treats. Now open 7 days a week!
Beverage options include organic, fair trade coffee; gluten-free beer; organic wine; and smoothies made from real ingredients. Lunch options include soups, salads and sandwiches. Organic and natural ingredients are featured throughout most of the menu. All foods are prepared fresh and from scratch right in their own kitchen.
Note: Birch Tree’s special gluten-free breads are now available at multiple Bethany Beach, Rehoboth and other Delaware locations, and can also be shipped to east coast customers (Virginia to New York.)
The cafe is inside/adjacent to Good Earth Market, and if you happen to arrive just before closing time to grab coffee and a GF treat for date night during your family’s beach vacation, they’ll let you hang out at a patio table out back overlooking the organic farm. Just remember to bring bug spray, and don’t mind the friendly gray farm cat. 🙂
Oh, and if you’re interested in building your library of real food, gluten-free cookbooks, be sure to peruse Chef Cathy’s amazing collection of culinary titles. They’re not for sale, but will give you great ideas for your own wishlist.

This is definitely our favorite place to eat in Bethany Beach. It’s a bit of a splurge, but the food and service are amazing!
The cafe offers an extensive gluten-free menu, and specializes in fresh, local, seasonal cuisine. They even have gluten-free crab cakes! The menu changes nightly, but I’m pretty sure the potato-romano crusted salmon is always available (it’s delicious). If stuffed flounder is available, you should definitely order that, too!
Mr. Native Texan ordered the flounder, I ordered the salmon, and then we split both entrees. Great idea, right? Oh, and we highly recommend the bacon spinach salad (pictured above). And the green beans. And the sauteed squash. And pretty much everything on the menu…
Also notable is the gluten-free dessert selection. Many restaurants offer zero gluten-free desserts, so it’s kind of amazing to choose from FOUR desserts. Mr. Native Texan was particularly ecstatic over the key lime pie with a chocolate crust (pictured above). Yum!
Reservations are recommended.
