Quinoa is an ancient grain from South America that is a complete protein and so healthy that there is almost no malnutrion in the people who consume quinoa in the poor regions of Bolivia. It’s great for vegetarians, babies and people with allergies.
- We love these for breakfast, with smoothies.
- They make a great on-the-go snack, as well.Read More
I recently spent nearly a decade in the Land of Big Hair (aka Texas). Which helps to explain why I’m starting with a list of my favorite hair products. After all, to quote our good friend Mike, you wear your hair every day.
Here they are, my current favorites:Read More
This was one of my top struggles at the beginning of our Strange, New Dietary Journey.
We have two young, growing boys here at the Yankee Homestead. They eat a lot. So does their mom. Unfortunately (or fortunately, in light of our health) most of our old snack stand-bys had gone out the window.
What’s a GF/SF/etc-F mom to do?
Before I begin sharing all my favorite natural products, I wanted to tell you about this helpful resource…
Have you heard of Skin Deep?
It’s an online cosmetic data base that provides product safety ratings. I’ve found it enormously helpful in my efforts to overhaul my family’s hygiene, beauty and cleaning products.Read More
Raspberry Basil Chicken is a new favorite at our house, a big hit with all three of my boys. Just the other night, Mr. Native Texan suggested that I serve the sauce at every meal, so he can pour it over everything he eats.

After cleaning up our diet, my next task was to address the products we use on our bodies and in our home.

Loudoun County peeps, have you been to the Natural Mercantile in Hamilton?
(And even if you don’t reside in LoCo, you may be interested in some of the items we purchase at The Merc. No doubt you can find them online, or at a health food store near you).
It’s my favorite health food store, and here’s why:
As you may recall, my husband hails from Texas.
Did you know that salsa has its own food group there?
We met and married in the Lonestar State, and the first few times Mr. Native Texan traveled north with me, he was quite sad to discover that not all restaurants bring out complimentary chips and salsa while you wait for your food.
Fast forward to our Strange, New Dietary Journey. Imagine me breaking the news to Mr. Native Texan that not only were his favorite brands of salsa NOT gluten-free, I was having trouble finding ANY salsa that met our new gluten-free, sugar-free requirements. I did manage to locate two different salsas that fit the bill, but they tasted terrible. 🙁
