Somewhere near our 6th wedding anniversary, I killed our 3rd blender.
At which time Mr. Native Texan implored “Will you please find the best blender, and BUY it!?”
Well, he didn’t need to ask twice. I immediately put our Consumer Reports membership to work by researching top blenders.
And I found it (insert Halellujah chorus and streaming light from heaven): the Almighty Vitamix.

The pricetag was hard for this frugalista to swallow, but as Mr. Native Texan pointed out, it would save us from replacing our wimpy blenders every other year for the rest of our marriage.
So we waited for my birthday and bought a refurbished model directly from Vitamix.
(Note: I can’t seem to find refurbished models offered on the Vitamix website anymore. This is the one we have. Since then, it’s come to my attention that Costco carries them. We are not Costco members, for reasons I’ll not delve into here. I am not your Costco expert, but many of my friends and family members are, and they tell me the Vitamix is sold at special times only. Apparently there must be an Official Vitamix Person present. From what I understand, Costco offers the best price around on this Mercedes of the Blender World).
Oh. My. Goodness.
The first time I used it, I literally held onto the counter while my heart pounded furiously in my chest. After turning it off, I realized I’d been holding my breath the entire time.
And truth be told, I still do this. I’m trying to become conscious of it and remind myself to BREATHE NORMALLY while operating the Vitamix, but it’s hard. It sounds very much like a jet preparing for take off.
For the Joy of the Blender
In fact, while the Vitamix is running, my boys have taken to running laps around our kitchen-dining-play-room loop and shouting at the top of their lungs. When I asked them what they were doing, they replied “We’re running for the joy of the blender!”
And every time I use it, I must admit that I feel some of that same joy. 🙂 It’s an amazing machine.
I use my Vitamix almost every day, and sometimes more than once per day. For what? I’m glad you asked.
Here’s a sampling of our favorite Vitamix uses:
- Homemade Tomato Puree (from our own garden tomatoes)
- Home Canned Tomato Soup
- “Homemade Herbamare”
- Coconut Milk Ice Cream
- Fudgy Popsicles
- Tropical Popsicles
- Homemade Tooth Soap
- Baby Food
- General pureeing–it’s a snap to puree vegetables and add them to certain soups, sauces and meats. (Don’t tell my kids)!
What do you make in your Vitamix?
